El gran éxito de NIRVANA
Kurt Cobain no estaba a gusto con el éxito de la canción, para él no tenía nada de especial y le parecía tan buena como «Drain You«, del mismo álbum, NEVERMIND.
Lo cierto es que la canción es considerada como uno de los himnos de la música de los 90. Es la canción más famosa del género grunge.
Kurt dijo que al componerla estaba intentando imitar a The Pixies y sus dinámicas.
Aunque se dice que la letra de SMELLS hace referencia a una ruptura amorosa del cantante, Cobain decía que el no creía que las letras tuvieran un significado especifico, que en realidad era muy perezoso a la hora de escribir y en general las dejaba para el último momento cuando la música ya estaba terminada.
Cuando Cobain les presentó la canción a sus campaneros, Dave Grohl y Krist Novoselic, este último dijo que le parecía ridícula.
